Cleveland, Ohio, July 12, 2000 – Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CleveMed), one of Ohio’s fastest growing technology companies, announced FDA clearance for its Crystal-EEG (R) Model 15. The wireless monitor records Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals without physically connecting patients to bulky diagnostic equipment.

“We’re delighted that we have received market clearance from the FDA,” says Robert N. Schmidt, president of Cleveland Medical Devices. The biomedical venture was this year named the 10th fastest growing business in Ohio by Inc. magazine.

“The device is about the size of a deck of cards and lets doctors perform EEG tests on their own laptop or PC, reducing cost and complexity of the diagnostic process. Best of all, patients no longer need to be tethered to cumbersome monitoring equipment while undergoing tests,” added Schmidt who founded the firm in 1990. “This is particularly important for emergency rooms, ICUs, and primary care offices, where floor space is at a premium.”

The Crystal-EEG is the first wearable digital wireless device using MicroSynth™ technology to trim cost drastically compared to traditional monitoring systems. By using inexpensive crystals and high quality FM radio signals, hospitals such as Johns Hopkins University can transmit test results to remote points in a ward without inconveniencing the patient, or getting in the way of doctors and nurses.

The machine is also effective for veterinarians performing seizure tests on dogs and horses, according to Schmidt. “Most folks don’t realize that as many dogs as people–about two million in the U.S.–suffer from epilepsy. This device will let vets perform tests on the animal without restraining it for long periods of time.”

Developed with funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health, the Crystal-EEG is manufactured in Cleveland at the Enterprise Development Incorporated (EDI) BioEnterprise Incubator at Case Western Reserve University.

Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. is a developer, manufacturer, and distributor of rehabilitation and physiological monitoring equipment for the medical and research communities.
